Copepods are a diverse group of small crustacean zooplankton, belonging to the subclass Copepoda within the subphylum Crustacea. They're all over the place in both fresh and marine environments, from the deep ocean to temporary freshwater pools. Copepods are incredibly nutritious, providing a huge source of protein in the marine food web, and play a vital role in aquatic ecosystems.
These little creatures have a distinctive shape, often resembling tiny shrimp or being spindle-shaped. They've got a single, unsegmented body made up of a cephalothorax (a fused head and thorax) followed by a segmented abdomen.
Copepods have a wide variety of feeding habits. Most are filter feeders, using specialized appendages to collect organic particles or phytoplankton from the water. Some are scavengers or detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter. A few are parasitic, attaching to a host organism and feeding on its tissues. Due to their varied diet, wild-caught copepods can offer a wide array of nutrients.
These minuscule crustaceans are important players in aquaculture. They're a key food source for many fish larvae, including fish, shrimp, and seahorses. They're best known for their rich supply of unsaturated fatty acids, making them a top choice as a first food for marine fish larvae.
