Product Description

Rotifers are a unique group of multicellular animals making up their own phylum, found all over the place in freshwater, marine, and intertidal waters. They're sometimes called wheel animals because of a rotating, wheel-like structure at their front end.

Rotifers usually have an oval or cylindrical body, measuring about 0.1 to 2 millimeters in size. They are filter feeders, primarily consuming phytoplankton, zooplankton, and organic detritus. Because they're so small and easy to digest, they're often the most important first food for aquaculture fish larvae. This is especially true for marine fish larvae. Compared to freshwater larvae, saltwater larvae are even smaller and have weaker digestive systems, making it tough for them to eat brine shrimp nauplii or copepods right after hatching. Plus, rotifers are easy to raise and readily available, making them critically important in marine fish larval rearing.
